Lorain Lions 90th Monarch Night

Lorain Lions celebrated their 90th Anniversary Monarch night on November 1 with a meaningful and inspiring banquet and ceremony.  ABOVE (standing): District Governor Forrest "Woody" Conrad, Zone Chairman Brent Parker, Lorain Lions President Doug Kayle.  Seated are Lion Jackie Christensen, the featured speaker, with her husband PDG Lion Bill Christensen, of the Canal Winchester Lions Club in Franklin County.  Lion Jackie has talked about and performed Helen Keller's famous speech to Lions Clubs International 1925 Convention at Cedar Point where she urged Lions world wide to take up the cause of the blind and visually impaired by becoming "Knights of the Blind."  Jackie received a standing ovation from the nearly 70 guests who attended the event at DeLuca's Place in the Park.
Here are the Lorain Lions honored this year for their years of service to the Lions: 

5 years:  Dave Burgess, Jack Clark, Tim Howard, Elizabeth Smith, John Smith, Tammy Tansey, Mark Worden;

10 years: Ed Chavez, David Macgregor

15 years:  Marshall Dimacchia

20 years:  Ed Baker, Dan Bihary, Gary Fischer, Doug Kayle

25 years: Barry Buck; Tim Lombardi, Dorothy McGuire, Terry Todhunter.

Also honored by Governor Forrest were last year Monarchs, Lion Bruce McCartney for 35 years and Lion Walter Frey for 15 years.

Lions Sort Potatoes at Second Harvest

Cleveland Eye Bank Executive Director Speaks to Lions

ABOVE:  Cleveland Eye Bank Executive Director Debbie Mae Johnson (left) and Eye Bank Education Director Dee Beacham (right) gave a very informative presentation about the services of the Cleveland Eye Bank to about 30 Lions at the October 25 luncheon meeting.  Thanks to Lion President Doug Kayle for arranging this excellent program, so relevant to the Lions' mission.

Lions District 13B Governor Visits Lorain Lions

ABOVE:  District Governor Forrest "Woody" Conrad, a member of the Ashland Evening Lion Club since 1992, visited the Lorain Lions for our Thursday, October 18 luncheon meeting.  DG Conrad mentioned he has a two and half to three hour drive to the furthest club in the district.  He didn't complain about that after he met a fellow Canadian DG at the USA-Canada Forum last month--that Governor's most distant club is 1700 miles away and can only be reached 10 months out of the year!

Lions Hear from Mayor Ritenauer and Mental Health Director Neff

ABOVE:  At our October 11 luncheon meeting, Mayor Chase Ritenauer (left) spoke about Issue 13 and detailed the need for the new income tax levy to fix our roads and re-open our parks department to make our city more attractive for businesses looking for a good location.  At the same meeting, Lion Charlie Neff (above right), Executive Director of the Lorain County Board of Mental Health, spoke about Issue 49, a renewal levy, which supports 18 local agencies that provide critical services for children, youth and adults with a variety of mental health needs.  Both are key issues for us to consider among the many on this November 6 ballot.

Lions Get Inside View of Magnate Don Brown Mansion

 ABOVE:  Terri Pabon, private secretary to millionaire inventor Don Brown, presented a fascinating program and slide presentation about the magnate and his incredible mansion on the lakefront west of Vermilion known as Waterwood Estate.  Forty-four Lions and guests were intrigued by the story and views of this unique property.  Many thanks to Lion Ben Norton for arranging this spectacular program!

 ABOVE:   Lion Tom Bruno reports on the World Service Day project at the Moore House where several Lions are scraping and painting the house for the Black River Historical Society.  The project began last Saturday with nine Lions volunteering and two more again on Monday.  We will try to finish the project on Saturday, October 6 starting at 10 a.m. (depending on the weather) or continue next week.  Thanks to Lions Tom and Barry Buck (seated above right) for putting together this great project.  EVERY HOUR volunteered will earn $10.00 in a contribution to the Vision Clinic Project from Lion Harold Lee!  Thanks Lion Harold!
